The Brattleboro Selectboard took one more step toward approving an ordinance that would prohibit nudity in the Vermont town’s public areas when it asked the town manager to prepare a draft ordinance for its first reading at its next meeting on Nov. 20. The board also agreed to add language to a town zoning regulation closing a loophole that would have allowed some businesses to have naked employees.

Selectboard Vice Chairman Dick DeGray said all members of the board had made compromises to make an anti-nudity ordinance acceptable. For his part, he said, he agreed to not pursue making nudity a criminal offense and would instead support keeping it a civil infraction punishable with a ticket. Hopefully, he said, making it a civil infraction will end nudity on Brattleboro’s streets. "I don’t want to see people getting arrested, but I don’t want to see people abusing the town," said DeGray.
